Swim Herschel Swim – Billion

Of all the songs we did, this one was the most “metal” Fishbone from the early 90s sound they had going. I believe this song was composed by Merkley to push us away from a more pure form of ska and towards something more marketable; we had label interest, but ska? This was years before Sublime got radio play and a decade and almost a half after the first Two Read More...

Swim Herschel Swim – Happy, Underwater

Musically, this song was all me. I wrote it in my Provo apartment and the original version, the one we played live, was far more skanky/ska than this recorded version. The tracking sessions for this song pretty much paved the way for the punk jazz band that several of us formed after this called Swimpigs. I’ve got our CD somewhere. Even though this is super mellow hits sounding, it was Read More...

Swim Herschel Swim: Lord Stinky

So it’s been what, a year since the last track was posted? I’m taking better meds now. This track, “Lord Stinky”, was a subject of some debate as we finally heard the lyrics in the studio. There was an ongoing battle of scatology pretty much 24/7 in the band. I love Rod’s voice (lead singer) on this one; full of of personality. I believe there is an actual D minor Read More...

Swim Herschel Swim: Montero

Let’s celebrate healthcare reform passing with one of my all-time favorite Swim Herschel Swim songs, Montero. This song features music written by me and the bass player, Kent. Words by Rod. I remember buying an Ensoniq EPS 16+ sampler in 1991 and it changed my life. It had a couple of megabytes of RAM and allowed for enough samples to be loaded in that I could write and arrange all Read More...

Burn Swim Burn: Scourge

This song is a straight up Merkley joint. He brought this in fully written and the rest of us just added a few touches here and there. Merkley bought a sampler and began to bring in songs he did fully composed. I think I added a some of the keyboard sounds on this one (clavinet, whoosy synth) but Merkely brought it in with some of them. Plus, the sax solo Read More...
