The High Line Architecture: HL23 next to High Line 519

This is an example of contemporary architecture working in harmony. On the left, HL23 (detail here); the right High Line 519 (519 West 23rd Street).

Here’s a vertical shot of them next to each other:

High Line architecture by Jon Armstrong for Blurbomat.com - 2012, Canon 5D Mark III, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS USM, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM, Chelsea, High Line, Lindy Roy, Neil Denari, New York City, architecture, autumn, travel

Love the futuristic amoeba shapes on the right. Amidst the distressed brick, walkway plantings and old NYC, these buildings stand apart as harmoniously weird. I love harmony and weird. Looks like something out of Blade Runner, before the constant rain.

Like I mentioned in this post, HL23 has a smaller base than top and looks entirely improbable. It could topple at any moment. You can’t deny that when you were a kid and imagined the future, the architecture of that future looked an awful lot like these two buildings. Ok. Maybe you can deny. I cannot deny that my future was inhabited by buildings that looked exactly like these, e.g., my Lego spaceships landed onto and crashed into them.
