Rob Delaney: On Depression & Getting Help

Rob Delaney: On Depression & Getting Help:

This was originally posted February 26, 2010.

I have dealt with suicidal, unipolar depression and I take medication daily to treat it. Over the past seven years, I’ve had two episodes that were severe and during which I thought almost exclusively of suicide. I did not eat much and lost weight…

Excellent, personal post about depression from a male point of view.

I had the privilege of being Rob’s roommate last year at SXSW. He is not only hysterically funny, he is an inspiration. Major props to one of the kindest people on earth.

Thanks for linking to that post, Jon. I have also experienced severe depressive episodes and I have struggled to help my husband understand how serious these episodes can be. We have been married for over 18 years but it’s just been in the last few months that I’ve actually admitted to him (or anyone, including my therapist) that I have serious suicidal thoughts when I’m in a deep depression. My husband still has some of the old attitude that you just need to try harder to be happy and asks me regularly when I’ll be able to stop taking my anti-depressant medication. I try to explain why I need to take it but I worry that he just doesn’t get it. I hope that reading posts like this can help him understand what I deal with. Thanks again.
